Broken English

Autore: Marco Mantovani


Il nome di Marianne Faithfull, fà pensare a due cose: la sua incredibile voce, e ad un album come Broken English, il suo capolavoro. Trattasi di un disco uscito nel 1979, ma, credetemi, di una attualità sconvolgente. Il fatto di essere stata una groupie degli Stones, ed in particolare di Mick Jagger, non deve averle granchè giovato agli inizi della sua carriera musicale. Troppo facile pensare a lei come ad una delle tante raccomandate. Non che i suoi lavori precedenti fossero capolavori, ma crescere artisticamente all’ombra dei grandi nomi è una trappola: facile iniziare, difficile resistere. Il Pubblico non sbaglia (quasi) mai. Ma Marianne Faithfull è un talento vero, una grandissima. Dicevamo della voce: incredibilmente roca, vissuta, ma al contempo molto musicale, tecnicamente validissima. Broken English è un disco quasi perfetto dall’inizio alla fine. Uscito in pieno periodo Punk, destò all’epoca parecchio scalpore: nel marasma non poteva passare inosservato. Uno strano elettro-rock, notturno, malato. Un mix incredibilmente riuscito di musica elettronica e cantautorato “colto”. Aleggiano le ombre di Lou Reed, Patti Smith, Bob Dylan, ma anche synthesizer a gògò, sonorità che ricordano gli Ultravox periodo John Foxx, certe cose dei Suicide.
8 canzoni, alcune delle quali grandissime. Broken English, fantastico brano di apertura, uno sfondo elettronico degno dei Kraftwerk, la voce è pura carta vetro.
Witches’song è una ballata elettro-acustica, ritmica sincopata, gradevole e delicata.
Brain Drain è un Blues scarno e malsano; la voce è praticamente perfetta: il fantasma di Robert Johnson aleggia per l’aria. Guilt è un altro pezzo-monster dell’album. Su di una ritmica vagamente reggae, la Faithfull crea una delle più belle canzoni di fine anni ’70: qui tutto è davvero perfetto, non ci sono parole.
The Ballad of Lucy Jordan è una ballata stralunata e vagamente dylaniana, eseguita sul solito “tappeto” elettronico. Molto particolare.
What's the Hurry è il brano meno riuscito: un discreto rock ritmato e orecchiabile.
Working Class Hero e la conclusiva Why d'ya do it sono ancora due canzoni indimenticabili: la prima è oscura e conturbante, con una voce tenebrosa come non mai. La seconda è un reggae rabbioso e distorto, Marianne canta con ruvida dolcezza. Una segnalazione và fatta al chitarrista di questo disco (un fedelissimo di Marianne): Barry Reynolds, semplicemente perfetto.
Nonostante una carriera ormai più che trentennale, Broken English rimane a tutt’oggi l’album più completo ed importante di Marianne Faithfull. Imperdibile.

Come non essere d'accordo con questa recensione !!!

Il testo di Lucy Jordan e' molto bello e ......struggente x chi si sente coinvolto....ma potrebbe funzionare anche se fosse la festa dell'uomo e il personaggio della canzone fosse maschile

Grazie a tutti per gli auguri e auguri a tutte! Un grazie particolare a Carla per avermi fatto conoscere Lucy Jordan. Non conoscevo quel testo. E' stato un bellissimo inaspettato regalo per la festa della donna. Mi ha riportato alla mente un'altra indimenticabile figura femminile, Laura Brown, la protagonista di uno dei tre racconti del libro "The hours" di Michael Cunningham. Se non l'avete letto, vi suggerisco di farlo. Buona giornata della donna a tutti
