Rock And Roll Hall Of Famer Ronnie Spector Has New Album Coming

Ronnie Spector

The announcement earlier this week that The Ronettes are going to be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame couldn't have come at a better time for the '60s girl group's frontwoman, Ronnie Spector.

The publicity surrounding the March 12 induction ceremony should generate more attention for Spector, just when she's preparing for the North American release of her The Last Of The Rock Stars album. The LP was released in the U.K. and Australia last year, and Spector plans to tour in support of it this year.

The album is full of impressive contributors, including Patti Smith, who coincidentally will enter the Hall Of Fame at the same time as Spector. Smith guests on "There Is An End," which features musical backing by The Greenhornes, as does "Won't Stop Saying Goodbye."

Keith Richards plays guitar on the Amy Rigby-written "All I Want" and Ike Turner's "Work Out Fine," the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Nick Zinner plays guitar on "Hey Sah Lo Ney." The late Joey Ramone joined Spector on the even later Johnny Thunders' "You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory," which originally appeared on a 1999 EP.

Spector contributed vocals to "Ode To L.A." on The Raveonettes' 2005 album, Pretty In Black. The tables are turned on this album, as The Raveonettes provide the music and backing vocals as Spector takes centre stage on the song.

Spector co-produced three tracks, while others with production credits include Daniel Rey (The Ramones, Misfits), John Curley (Afghan Whigs, The Greenhornes) and Richard Gottehrer (Blondie, The Go-Go's).

Spector was married to talented but troubled producer Phil Spector in the '60s and '70s, and she claims that she suffered severe emotional abuse during their time together. She exacts some revenge on her ex (who's still awaiting trial for the 2003 murder of actress Lana Clarkson at his Alhambra, California mansion) in "Girl From The Ghetto," which includes the lines, "I hope your cell is filled with magazines/On every page there's a big picture of me/And underneath the picture the caption will read/Not bad for a girl from the ghetto like me."

The new LP is Spector's third solo album, and the first since 1987's Unfinished Business.

Here are the songs on The Last Of The Rock Stars:

"Never Gonna Be Your Baby"
"Ode To L.A."
"All I Want"
"Hey Sah Lo Ney"
"There Is An End"
"Work Out Fine"
"Here Today Gone Tomorrow"
"You Can’t Put Your Arms Around A Memory"
"Girl From The Ghetto"
"Won’t Stop Saying Goodbye"
"Out In The Cold Again"

Jay-Z, Vedder, Richards Among Rock Hall Inducters

March 02, 2007, 2:25 AM ET

Several superstar artists have signed on to induct artists into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at a March 12 ceremony in New York. Jay-Z will induct Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, while Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder will induct R.E.M. and the Rolling Stones' Keith Richards will usher in the Ronettes. Patti Smith will be inducted by reclusive Rage Against The Machine vocalist Zach de la Rocha.

In what will be the evening's most anticipated induction, Velvet Revolver will introduce Van Halen, whose summer tour with original vocalist David Lee Roth collapsed last week. The group's camp has yet to make any statement about which members, if any, will attend the event; it is understood that Velvet Revolver will perform live in Van Halen's place.

Also, Aretha Franklin will perform as a tribute to the late Ahmet Ertegun, who served as the Chairman of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation and spoke at the beginning of each annual induction ceremony.
