The presence of a band exuding the most basic fundamentals of rock incites fear in mass media across the globe due to the concern that it could be an oversaturation; this fear has led to the ostracizing of quality bands that are capable of inducing pure bliss via the essence that is rock. Therefore, coming across these bands is truly a treasure.

Humble beginnings seeded in the fundamentals of rock, all the way down to the dark and dirty cramped spaces, have inspired Andrea Requirez, Gianlorenzo Mungiovino, Manuel Bellone, Andrea Nocifora, and Vincenzo Matassa to form the Licks. These Italians have my head spinning. Northbound, their 2009 EP, tees up bluesy classic rock and knocks it into the stratosphere with a modern attitude. Throwing on the album I took a second and then a third look to make sure I wasn’t listening to an off-shoot project of Australia’s Jet. I can attest these guys are not affiliated.

Although rock has a language of its own, fear not, these songs are in English, although there is no hiding Matassa’s accent when he belts out each song in a Nic Cester-like voice. The reverberating drums, bass, and guitars echo a 70s rock influence throughout the five tracks. Structurally nodding their caps at the classic rock feel with the chorus bookending slightly distorted guitar solos, this an album that brings a subconscious comfort when you listen to it. It’s heavily rooted in the sounds most of us grew up emulating.

Licks’ formula for their sound leaves nothing to decipher. Wearing their influences on their sleeves, you’re offered up a modern rock album built on the guitar styles of Keith Richards and Joe Perry, bass licks that steer without being dominating, and fundamental bass to snare drumming prompting your foot tapping through the end. This is the harmless pure rock that makes you want to show up in masses to rock the night away live or cruise the town with your window rolled down. Northbound is an album where you know what you’re getting; it isn’t revolutionary but is definitely worth your time.

This sleeper EP came out two years ago and has been a work in progress for longer. Get your hands on this EP, legally, and join me in hoping for much more. Any way you look at it, whether to say you listen to Italian rock or just to claim you got there first, these guys have succeeded.

And this isn’t even a full length album.

The one constant we can rely on as a society is that people love “retro” things and bring certain styles back out of dormancy. This is the only way we can explain that over the past decade we have seen the triumphant return of day-glo shirts, trucker hats, and (sigh) mustaches. It seems the nostalgia gods hold a lottery every five years to decide what generational trend will come back.

The Licks are hoping the gods drew the ping pong ball labeled “rock.”

From modest beginnings in a garage in Italy, the Licks refined their stripped down to bare-bone essentials rock ‘n roll sound. They worked out songs and tinkered with them until they felt just right and recorded them on their debut EP Northbound. All five tracks are a style of rock of a bygone era: they include dirty blues riffs, soulful guitar solos, clichés about drinking and women, as well as a strutting and tambourine playing frontman.

Staying true to their influences like the Rolling Stones and Lynyrd Skynyrd, they are cashing in their chips on a retro rock comeback. With the rising star of bands like Rival Sons, the Licks may become the benefactors of a paradigm shift back to straight-up rock. This will not be just a happy coincidence; it will be because the Licks have studied rock and developed a technical sound based around four chords.
Frontman Vincenzo Matassa sings about women, smoking, drinking, douchebags in designer clothes and the rock ‘n roll lifestyle with a voice that blends equal parts Mick Jagger and Nic Cester. Andrea Nocifora brings in crunchy guitar riffs while Gianlorenzo Mungiovino contributes wailing six-string solos. Manuel Bellone and Andrea Requirez do the heavy lifting of keeping solid rhythms with their respective bass and drum playing.

The band’s influences weigh heavily on their music and leave me hoping the Licks can get out of the shroud of the Stones and working on a sound unique to them and not textbook 70s rock. It is one thing to show your influences and quite another to emulate them. If rock ‘n roll is truly making a comeback, then I hope the Licks can truly stand out. As Northbound has shown me, they have the talent and the chance to truly shine.

E una delle tante (molto azzeccata, IMHO) italiana:

È troppo semplice (oltre che sbagliato, fatta eccezione per Busy Job e Feeling Back Home, il sound ricorda più i New York Dolls di Johnny Thunders) liquidare i Licks come un'imitazione nostalgica dei Rolling Stones. Dalla plettrata calda che apre il loro primo EP, Northbound, questi cinque ragazzi di Palermo vogliono dimostrare come sia possibile realizzare un buon disco pop/rock in Italia (con possibile singolo-hit incluso) senza dover per forza ricorrere al linguaggio dell'assurdo dei Verdena o agli intellettualismi sonori degli Afterhours: cinque tracce piene di energia e riff accattivanti che indubbiamente, come la maggior parte degli EP, sono più degli schemi di partenza registrati nel momento in cui ispirazione ed euforia erano fresche.
Due pezzi su tutti, la trascinante Busy Job e Feeling Back Home, sono i più riusciti del disco, quelli a cui il processo idea-composizione-registrazione immediata ha giovato maggiormente: la prima ha tutto il potenziale per essere il singolo da traino di un eventuale album a firma Licks, con la sua forma semplice (tre accordi + riff principale), mentre la seconda è una ballata sincera che riesce a evocare la solitudine in maniera cristallina grazie ad un abile intreccio tra chitarre acustiche, acquosi ricami di slide e un ritmo inesorabile scandito dalla grancassa – un ruolo ancora più importante gioca l’efficacissima metafora che apre il testo, mentre il cambio di registro arriva troppo presto (una strofa in più non avrebbe guastato) per fare immergere del tutto l’ascoltatore nell’atmosfera e dominare a pieno le sue emozioni.
Nite Shot, You Think You’re Cool e Sillian Hotel, dall’altra parte, sono dei pezzi dall’alto potenziale che però mancano di compattezza (dovevano ovviamente essere metabolizzati maggiormente da tutti e cinque i componenti) e sembrano più registrati dal vivo che in studio (la conclusione stessa di You Think You’re Cool ricorda la classica chiusura da concerto): paradossalmente, le versioni live dei brani sopra citati, ascoltate più o meno sei mesi dopo l’uscita dell’EP, suonano molto più “studio” e meno dispersive delle loro controparti registrate, a testimoniare il fatto che il gruppo ha acquisito una certa esperienza e ha personalizzato sempre di più il repertorio, aggiungendo quei piccoli dettagli che in giusta quantità arricchiscono l’ascolto e possono portare un buon pezzo a diventare la punta di diamante di un album (l’armonica all’inizio di Feeling Back Home, perfetta).
Northbound sono i Licks allo stato brado, cinque musicisti (e cinque tracce) su cui si potrebbe investire a occhi chiusi anche soltanto ascoltando questo primo EP.
