Diciassette mesi hanno separato “Electric Ladyland” da “Are You Experienced?”.

Minore?

(All Along The Watchtower)

49 Years Ago: Jimi Hendrix Arrives in London

Jimi Hendrix, then just a 24-year-old prodigy, touched down in London on Sept. 24, 1966, as a virtual unknown. His brief but important stay there would forever alter rock history.

The young guitarist was accompanied on the trip by manager Chas Chandler, who had first seen Hendrix playing at New York’s Cheetah Club. Chandler took the guitarist on as a client and helped him form the Jimi Hendrix Experience, with bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell. They found little initial success, however, in America. That changed, almost overnight, once Hendrix set foot on U.K. soil.

Early on, Hendrix sat in with the Eric Clapton and Cream. Onstage with the trio – rounded out by drummer Ginger Baker and bassist Jack Bruce – Hendrix memorably performed “Killing Floor.” Clapton quickly befriended Hendrix, emerging as one of his staunchest early advocates.

By mid-October 1966, Hendrix was touring as a supporting act in France. He and the Experience were then signed to Track Records, which released “Hey Joe” as a single – and that provided momentum for a headlining date in November at the Bag O’Nails in London. Clapton, members of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and Jeff Beck crowded into the nightclub, where the collective reaction could best be described as stunned. “All the stars were there,” singer-songwriter Kevin Ayers once said, “and I heard serious comments – you know ‘s–,’ ‘Jesus,’ ‘damn’ and other words worse than that!”

Newfound fame wasn’t all the guitarist gained on his visit overseas. His first night in London also landed Jimi Hendrix a girlfriend. He began a relationship with Kathy Etchingham, one that would last until February 1969.

Jimi Hendrix ‘Electric Church’ Concert Doc Schedules DVD/Blu-ray Release

Immagine

Clear some room on your DVD shelves, Jimi Hendrix fans: Electric Churchis coming home.
As previously reported, Jimi Hendrix: Electric Church captures the legendary guitarist’s performance at the 1970 Atlanta Pop Festival; following a September engagement on Showtime and the Aug. 28 release of the soundtrack, the home version of the film — which features footage not included in the televised broadcast — is scheduled to arrive Oct. 30.

Electric Church largely consists of footage filmed by future Buddy Holly Story director Steve Rash, who stored the film in a barn after plans for a Woodstock-style documentary fell through. More than 30 years later, the reels were finally developed, offering fans long-overdue opportunity to enjoy what a press release promises is “a transcendent viewing experience.”

The home version’s audio soundtrack includes stereo and 5.1 surround sound mixes taken from the original master tapes by Hendrix’s recording engineer Eddie Kramer. Bonus material includes performances of “Red House” and “Freedom,” both left off the broadcast, as well as a music video for “Room Full of Mirrors” that combines existing footage with previously unreleased photographs of the show. You can check out the Electric Church performance of “Purple Haze” here, and take a look at the complete track listing below.

49 Years Ago: The Jimi Hendrix Experience Form

Immagine

On Oct. 6, 1966, the Jimi Hendrix Experience were born. Former Animals bassist Chas Chandler had caught a performance by Jimmy James & the Blue Flames while hanging out in New York City in the summer of 1966. Very impressed with what he heard and saw, Chandler convinced James, soon to be recording under his own name, to come with him to England where he would manage his career and make him a star.

After arriving on U.K. shores in September, Chandler introduced Hendrix to bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell, who would soon become the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Their first actual rehearsal took place on Oct. 6, 1966, which, call it irony or coincidence, was also the date that LSD was declared illegal in the U.S.. The band rehearsed for a week before hooking up with French pop singer Johnny Hallyday for a four-date French tour.

The impact of the Jimi Hendrix Experience in England was immediate. Fans, including fellow musicians such as Eric Clapton, Brian Jones, Jeff Beck and Pete Townshend, spread the word on this new musical force. By the time of the release of the band’s debut single, “Hey Joe,” in December, Hendrix was fast on his way to becoming a legend.

50 Years Ago: Chas Chandler Experiences Jimi Hendrix Live for the First Time

By 1966, Jimi Hendrix‘s career was stalled. The guitarist was frustrated with gigs as a sideman for artists that included Little Richard and the Isley Brothers. His fortunes changed when fashion model Linda Keith convinced Animals‘ bassist Chas Chandler to see Hendrix at the Café Wha? in New York’s Greenwich Village. Hendrix’s performance on July 5, 1966, left Chandler awestruck. He immediately put into motion plans to bring Hendrix to London and help him become a superstar.

Keith, a blues fan and girlfriend of the Rolling Stones‘ Keith Richards, first saw Hendrix at New York’s Cheetah discotheque, where his band performed as Jimmy James and the Blue Flames. “It was so clear to me,” Keith told The Guardian. “I couldn’t believe nobody had picked up on him before because he’d obviously been around. He was astonishing – the moods he could bring to music, his charisma, his skill and stage presence. Yet nobody was leaping about with excitement. I couldn’t believe it.”

Keith was determined to gain Hendrix exposure. Stones’ manager Andrew Loog Oldham was persuaded to catch Hendrix at Cafe au Go Go, but Oldham left unimpressed. In early July, the Animals arrived in New York to begin a North American tour. Chandler, aware that his band was on the verge of breaking up, hoped to move into record production and artist management.

“The night before we were to play in Central Park, someone played me Tim Rose’s version of ‘Hey Joe,’ which had been out for about nine months in America,” Chandler recalled in Ultimate Hendrix: An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Live Concerts and Sessions. “I was so taken by it that I vowed, ‘As soon as I get back to England, I’m going to find an artist to record this song.’

“Later that evening, we went out to a club called Ondine’s. As we walked in, Linda Keith came walking out and we stopped to talk. She told me she was going out with this guy in the Village that I had to see. … I went down to the Village again and saw Jimmy James and the Blue Flames perform at the Café Wha? It just so happened the first song Hendrix played that afternoon was ‘Hey Joe.'”

Guitarist and producer Bob Kulick, a Café Wha? regular, was there. “Chandler was a star himself, because he played bass with the Animals, and he’s sitting about seven rows from the stage,” Kulick told Guitar Player. “I look over at Chandler, and his mouth is hanging open. And when Jimi started playing with his teeth on ‘Hey Joe,’ Chandler’s drink fell from his hand and spilled all over his lap. I saw it happen. I’m sure Chandler knew what we did at that moment – that Jimi had mopped the floor with every guitar player the guy had ever seen before. There wasn’t a person who saw him play who didn’t think he was a god.”

After the show, Chandler and Hendrix discussed his plan to take the guitarist to London and form a band with British musicians. The next time they met, Hendrix agreed to sign with Chandler and Animals’ manager Michael Jeffery. Jimmy James was soon to become Jimi Hendrix.

“That afternoon at the Café Wha? Jimi was just an explosive kid whose potential struck me,” Chandler recalled. “As much as his version of ‘Hey Joe’ impressed me, what convinced me of his talent was another song that he did that first day, ‘Like a Rolling Stone.’ I knew [Bob] Dylan well and loved his material, but ‘Like a Rolling Stone’ was the first of his songs that I didn’t quite get. It was something about the way Dylan had sung the song. I never felt he expressed it properly. When Jimi sang the song, he did it with tremendous conviction and the lyrics came right through to me. My initial impression, having heard him play ‘Hey Joe’ and ‘Like a Rolling Stone,’ was that I couldn’t see his career going in any other way but the place between those two songs. That was where I had to go.”

Jimi Hendrix / Electric Ladyland 50th anniversary super deluxe edition

3CD+blu-ray • 6LP vinyl+blu-ray • demos • 5.1 mix
This November, Sony’s Legacy Recordings and Experience Hendrix, L.L.C. will reissue a 50th anniversary edition of Jimi Hendrix‘s third and final studio album Electric Ladyland.

This new edition of the 1968 album will be available as a 3CD+blu-ray set or a 6LP+blu-ray edition. Via the blu-ray, both include a new 5.1 surround sound mix by Eddie Kramer, 24 bit/96 kz high resolution stereo audio, as well as a documentary on the making of the landmark record.

The album has been newly remastered by Bernie Grundman from the original analogue tapes. This is of course the first CD and being a double this is obviously spread across two records for the vinyl set. Audiophiles will be delighted to hear that Grundman prepared an all analog direct-to-disc vinyl transfer of the album.

The second CD (or the next two LPs for the vinyl box) feature ‘More Electric Ladyland: The Early Takes’ which presents 20 never before heard demos and studio outtakes. Some of these are intimate demos for song ideas Hendrix recorded himself on a reel-to-reel tape at the Drake Hotel, as well as early recording session takes featuring guest appearances from Buddy Miles, Stephen Stills and Al Kooper

Electric Ladyland – 6LP + blu-ray 50th anniversary box set
The final two LPs (or the last CD) feature ‘The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Live At the Hollywood Bowl 9/14/68‘. This is a ‘recently unearthed’ soundboard recording of the concert that took place just weeks before the release of Electric Ladyland.

As well as the 5.1 surround mix and hi-res stereo, the blu-ray element includes the full-length documentary At Last… The Beginning: The Making of Electric Ladyland.

In terms of presentation, the vinyl set contains three gatefold 2LP sets and the blu-ray disc. This come with a large 48-page book containing Jimi’s handwritten lyrics, poem and instructions to his record label, as well as never before published photos from the recording sessions that were shot by Eddie Kramer himself. It appears as if these slot into an outer slipcase. The 3CD+blu-ray set appears to be a large format book edition with the same booklet content.

This Electric Ladyland 50th anniversary super deluxe edition will be released on 9 November 2018

Sicuramente uscirà in DVD.
