Gregg Allman sta male, annullato il tour

Gregg Allman, che ha promesso la sua autobiografia per la primavera 2012, non sta bene ed è stato costretto ad annullare tutte le date del suo tour statunitense comprese tra il 26 agosto e il 15 settembre. Il quotidiano "The Tribune-Democrat" di Johnstown, ripreso dalla AP, afferma che il cantante, tastierista e chitarrista che è anche in forza alla Allman Brothers Band ha problemi respiratori; Gregg (63 anni, Nashville, Tennessee) dovrà rimanere in ospedale per parecchi giorni e poi necessiterà di almeno quattro settimane a letto. E le cattive notizie non arrivano mai sole: il suo gruppo, i Bridge, sarebbe in difficoltà finanziarie e avrebbe deciso di sciogliersi entro la fine dell'anno. L'ex marito di Cher, che negli anni Settanta cadde preda di alcool e droghe, dal 2007 è affetto da epatite C e nel giugno 2010 è stato sottoposto a trapianto di fegato. Gregg fondò la ABB nel 1969 con suo fratello Duane, morto nell'ottobre 1971 in un incidente motociclistico a Macon, Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks e Jai Johanny Johanson. Il capolavoro della formazione di rock sudista è generalmente ritenuto lo straordinario live "At Fillmore East", un doppio con soli sette lunghi brani. Pochi mesi fa Gregg, che ora abita a Richmond Hill in Georgia, ha pubblicato l'album "Low country blues".

06 gen 2012 - Più che una consuetudine è ormai una tradizione, quella della Allman Brothers Band al Beacon Theatre di New York. La formazione southern-rock infatti calca le assi del teatro da più di vent'anni anni, tutti gli anni, con le sole eccezioni del 2008, con Greg Allman seriamente ammalato, e del 2010, quando il Cirque du Soleil "rubò" le prenotazioni e la ABB fu costretta, con le pive nel sacco, a trasferirsi all'United Palace. Il gruppo parte con dieci date. Le quali, se faranno registrare il "tutto esaurito", saranno implementate con altre. Il calendario:

Il "mitico" Beacon è sulla Upper Broadway di Manhattan (2124 Broadway), offre 2829 posti a sedere ed è stato inaugurato nel 1929. Nel 1976 vi suonarono, per una serie di date, i Grateful Dead. La Allman vi si esibisce dal 1989; nel 2009, per festeggiare i suoi quarant'anni, la formazione rimase in scena per ben tre settimane. Tra gli invitati, Levon Helm della Band ed Eric Clapton. Lo scorso anno la ABB ha eseguito in tutto tredici show. Il penultimo, quello del 25 marzo, è stato il duecentesimo al Beacon. Lo scorso 21 dicembre la Recording Academy ha annunciato i vincitori dei premi Special Merit 2012 che saranno consegnati durante la settimana dei Grammy Awards. La ABB è tra gli artisti ai quali è stata riconosciuta l'onorificenza ed è in compagnia di Glen Campbell, Antonio Carlos Jobim, George Jones, Memphis Horns, Diana Ross e Gil Scott-Heron.

La tradizione continua, anche nel 2013 Allman Brothers al Beacon

06 gen 2013 - La Allman Brothers Band ormai fa poco notizia, ma -specialmente negli States - è ancora una piccola potenza e la sua ormai tradizionale serie di date al Beacon Theatre di New York è sempre accolta con grande piacere dagli estimatori, sia i più numerosi statunitensi sia i fan esteri. E anche quest'anno la ricorrenza, che va in scena dal 1989 e ha fatto segnare nel corso degli anni ben 210 show all'insegna del "tutto esaurito", si rinnova. Gli show sono attesi per il prossimo marzo presso il consueto teatro sulla Upper Broadway di Manhattan. Il Beacon, 2800 posti, è stato inaugurato nel 1929. Le date:

Oltre agli show nella Big Apple, la ABB suonerà il 12 o il 13 aprile (è ancora da decidere) al Crossroads Benefit di Eric Clapton in scena al Madison Square Garden, e per due serate (19 e 20 aprile) al Wanee Music Festival di Live Oak, Florida.

Quando nell’agosto del 1973 venne pubblicato su Capricorn Records “Brothers and Sisters”, il quinto album dell’Allman Brothers Band, il leggendario gruppo Southern blues-rock era già conosciuto nel mondo grazie al live album del 1971, “At Fillmore East”. Il successo di quell’album fu seguito dalle tragiche scomparse del chitarrista e leader Duane Allman e del bassista Berry Oakley, entrambi morti a causa di due incidenti motociclistici. La band era all’apice della popolarità e seguì nel febbraio del 1972 il doppio LP “Eat a Peach”, l’ultimo con le registrazioni postume di Duane Allman.
L’Allman Brothers Band si ri-organizzò sotto la leadership del cantante/organista Gregg Allman (fratello di Duane) e del chitarrista Dickey Betts ed arrivarono i nuovi acquisti Lamar Williams al basso e Chuck Leavell alle tastiere per completare la formazione accanto agli altri due membri fondatori, il batterista Butch Trucks e il percussionista Jaimoe.
“Brothers and Sisters” diventò subito il loro best seller stazionando per 5 settimane al primo posto delle classifiche di Billboard e diventando il primo album di platino delle loro carriera con brani diventati dei veri e propri classic del Southern Rock: “Ramblin’ Man”, “Wasted Words”, “Jessica” e “Come and Go Blues”.

Il primo CD è l'album originale rimasterizzato, il secondo contiene materiale inedito di studio: i brani 1,2 e 6 sono prove del 1972, il brano 3 è una outtake strumentale del 1972, i brani 4 e la 5 sono sempre rehearsals, la 7 e la 8 sono due outtakes del 1973 e il 9° brano è una studio jam del 1974. Il terzo e il quarto CD contengono il concerto completo al Winterland Ballroom di San Francisco del 26 settembre del 1973. Il prezzo, come detto in precedenza, dovrebbe essere contenuto, tra i 35 e i 40 euro, indicativamente.

Allman Brothers, Jackson Browne in concerto per un tributo a Gregg Allman

Sam Moore, Taj Mahal, Warren Haynes, Eric Church, Natalie Cole, Jackson Browne, John Hiatt, Pat Monahan dei Train, Martina McBride, Trace Adkins, logicamente la Allman Brothers Band, poi altri ancora da annunciare hanno già dato il semaforo verde alla loro partecipazione ad un concerto che si terrà, all'inizio del 2014, come tributo a Gregg Allman.
Il 65enne musicista, tra i fondatori della ABB nel 1969, di tanto in tanto si spinge ancora in tour nonstante la cagionevole salute; dopo l'epatite C, diagnosticatagli nel 2007, nel 2010 Gregg ha subìto il trapianto del fegato.
Il concerto si terrà, riporta Associated Press, il prossimo 10 gennaio al Fox Theatre di Atlanta.
Il titolo dell'evento, che sarà filmato per successiva commercializzazione, è "All my friends: celebrating the songs & voice of Gregg Allman". Il direttore musicale della serata sarà Don Was, il 61enne produttore in passato alla corte di - tra gli altri - Rolling Stones, Zucchero e Bob Dylan.

Warren Haynes e Derek Trucks lasciano la Allman Brothers Band

Brutto colpo per la Allman Brothers Band: in contemporanea il cantante/chitarrista Warren Haynes e il chitarrista Derek Trucks hanno annunciato che lasciano il gruppo alla fine del 2014.

"Per 25 anni e 15 anni rispettivamente", hanno scritto i due musicisti in un comunicato congiunto, "abbiamo avuto l'onore e il piacere di suonare, vivere, imparare e viaggiare con la Allman Brothers Band, uno dei gruppi rock'n'roll davvero leggendari al mondo. Saremo per sempre grati per l'opportunità, l'esperienza, l'amore, l'entusiasmo e il supporto dei fan, che sono incredibili. Entrambi ci stiamo preparando a gettarci totalmente in diverse imprese creative e musicali e quindi, per questo, il 2014 sarà il nostro ultimo anno come membri della band".

Haynes era entrato nel gruppo grazie all'ex chitarrista Dickey Betts nel 1989, diventando in pratica il frontman della Allman Brothers Band (in attività, lo ricordiamo, dal 1969. Nel 1997 aveva temporaneamente lasciato per concentrarsi sul suo altro gruppo, i Gov’t Mule, ma era tornato nel 2000.
Nel 1999, invece, Trucks (che è il nipote del batterista Butch Trucks) era entrato a far parte della band.

La decisione di lasciare la Allman Brothers Band, oggettivamente, pare bizzarra - oltre che inaspettata. Il gruppo, infatti, non è di sicuro tra i più attivi e ha impegni piuttosto leggeri a cui far fronte. Negli ultimi anni, ad esempio, a parte un mese di tour ogni estate non c'è stato quasi niente d'altro.

Allman Brothers Band, addio alle scene dal vivo (con riserva)

I primi segnali, avranno avuto modo di notare i più attenti, arrivarono già lo scorso 9 gennaio, quando sia Warren Haynes che Derek Trucks annunciarono di volere abbandonare le fila, a fine anno, della Allman Brothers Band, istituzione rock americana nella quale i due militavano rispettivamente da venticinque e quindici anni. Oggi, a mettere definitivamente la parola fine alla carriera dal vivo di una delle realtà più consolidate oltreoceano e non solo, è stato nientemeno che il fondatore del gruppo, Gregg Allman: "Basta, è finita", ha spiegato senza troppi giri di parole il sessantaseienne di Nashville, Tennessee, precisando come dopo gli ultimi show già previsti per quest'anno la carriera live della band si interromperà definitivamente, "Quarantacinque anni sono abbastanza, e - in ogni caso - ho voglia di fare altro. Tutti, nel gruppo, hanno ottime prospettive per tenersi occupati coi propri progetti solisti".

Un addio, quello dato oggi da Allman, che potrebbe trasformarsi in un arrivederci, nel migliore dei casi: "Potremmo anche ritrovarci per un concerto una volta ogni cinque anni", ha ipotizzato lui, pur senza azzardare ipotesi più strutturate.

Per il momento, la Allman Brothers Band ha in programma solo una corposa residency al Beacon Theater di New York, che si concretizzerà in quattordici appuntamenti tutti compresi tra i prossimi 7 e 29 marzo: terminati gli impegni nella Grande Mela, il gruppo proseguirà alla volta di Live Oak, in Florida, per due apparizioni i prossimi 11 e 12 agosto, alle quali seguiranno altri due spettacoli - a Scranton, Pennsylvania, il 15 e 16 agosto - che precederanno l'ultimo live in assoluto, programmato a Arrington, Virginia, per il prossimo 4 settembre.

Warren Haynes on Life After the Allman Brothers Band: Exclusive Interview

Warren Haynes stayed true to form on his latest album Ashes & Dust, even as he took his deepest step yet into Americana.

A member of the now-defunct Allman Brothers Band, Haynes has also collaborated over the years with the Grateful Dead, Dave Matthews and Elvis Costello. He even played on a William Shatner project. This time around, Haynes is backed by the progressive bluesgrass band Railroad Earth; Phil Lesh and Grace Potter also appear on Ashes & Dust.

We caught up with Warren Haynes ahead of his guest spot this evening with the Roots on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon for a talk about the end of the Allman Brothers Band, the new album and what’s next.

You’re sitting in the Roots tonight, have you spent much time with late night’s greatest house band?

We’ve played together, but I’ve never sat in with them on Fallon.

It seems like their guests have a great time. What do you expect?

It’s always been fun to play with them. I sent them a list of suggestions we could play. And I’m assuming the set list will be similar to that. [Laughs.] But I have no idea.

“Spots of Time” appeared on your studio release, but this Phil Lesh co-written song has been around a while, right?

Not that long. A few years, I guess. I wrote it with Phil when we were in the studio working on something else a while back. He said he had some music he wanted to give to me. He hoped I would write some lyrics and the melody. He said, “It’s called ‘Spots of Time.’ I said, “Oh, do you have lyrics already written?” He didn’t but he told me the music and title were inspired by a Wordsworth poem called “The Prelude” that referred to “spots of time.” It’s a phrase Wordsworth used in several of his pieces. I wasn’t familiar with the poet’s work, so I Googled the poem then I based the lyrics on what Wordsworth’s work meant to me.

If you don’t mind me saying, that’s a pretty complicated way to write a song.

[Laughs.] It was kind of an unorthodox way of of going about it, but it turned out so well. I love the song. Of course, Phil’s music has his uniqueness all over it.

And the song found its way into a few Allman Brothers’ sets.

Yes, the Allman Brothers began performing it live the last three years or so that we were touring. I’m sure we would have recorded it on the final Allman Brothers record had we made that record.

Thinking about the Brothers and Phil Lesh, I wonder if you wish the Allmans did something big like the Dead did this summer to put a stamp on the final run of shows, to cap your legacy.

I do. I think we should have made more out of our last year. And I think in hindsight everybody probably thinks that. At one point, I thought we were all on the same page but it was hard to maintain communication sometimes in that organization.

Do you have more Lesh collaborations that came out of those sessions?

There’s one more song I wrote with Phil that I actually recorded with Railroad Earth. I haven’t released it, but we’ll see. I recorded 25 songs for this album, so they’ll be a follow up of some sort.

You constantly collaborate. Do these team ups always go well? Are you sure of the chemistry before you go into them?

You usually have a pretty good idea that it’s going to work, but you never know until it starts happening. I’ve been very fortunate to be surrounded by so many musicians and have these opportunities. I can’t think of any times that I thought something would turn out great and it didn’t. [Laughs.] But you still just don’t know what it’s going to be until it happens. For instance, the Ashes & Dust band we put together for this tour has a similar instrumentation to Railroad Earth, but it has a different approach. It’s a little more jazzy.

Yeah, I see that you’re doing a lot Allman Brothers and Bob Dylan songs, plus stuff from the Band and Little Feat and even Radiohead’s “Paranoid Android.”

We’re basing our repertoire on the strengths of the band and we’re adding songs every day, going back through my catalog, pulling in old songs, odd covers, rearranging the material based on how we play together. It’s interesting to see how it’s all taking shape and yet changing all the time. I’ve never done anything like this, and I’m having a blast. It’s changing day by day.

I’m hoping Grace Potter joins you one night for “Gold Dust Woman.” You have played that live together right?

We have. That’s where I got the idea to put it on the album. Our voices blend so well together. It’s a beautiful version. One of the things that helped us hit off in the beginning was our love of a wide array of music. She can do this kind of song, and so many more things.

So, what’s next?

I like bouncing around. We’re going to make a new Gov’t Mule record soon. I still want to make a jazz-influenced instrumental record, which I’ve never done. I still want to make a traditional blues record, which I’ve never done. The next Gov’t Mule record will be different from what we’ve ever done. And I love what I’m doing right now. I just don’t know in what order it will come, but I prefer it that way. I think that’s what keeps me inspired and keeps the energy flowing.
