A new installment of The Rolling Stones‘ From the Vault archival series featuring footage from one of the band’s most historic concerts, the free show the rock legends’ played in London’s Hyde Park in July 1969, will be released on July 24. From the Vault: Hyde Park Live 1969 will be available on DVD, Blu-ray and as and digital download.

The event was The Stones’ first full-length show in more than two years, and also marked the first concert the band played with its then-new guitarist, Mick Taylor. The show also came at an extremely emotional time for the group, as founding Stones guitarist Brian Jones had died just two days before.

Hyde Park Live 1969 features footage originally shot by the U.K.’s Granada TV, and includes most of the songs The Rolling Stones played at the gig, as well as behind-the-scenes segments and interviews with the band’s members, concertgoers and some of the Hell’s Angels who served as security for the event.

The band’s set featured its first-ever live performance of “Honky Tonk Women,” a rendition of Johnny Winter‘s “I’m Yours & I’m Hers” — the only time the group ever played that tune — and versions of Stones classics like “Midnight Rambler,” “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” During the show, Mick Jagger delivered a eulogy to Jones that included the reading of a poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley. The Rolling Stones closed the concert with an epic, 18-minute rendition of “Sympathy for the Devil” with accompaniment from some African tribal drummers.

The Blu-ray and DVD of From the Vault: Hyde Park Live 1969 comes packaged with a booklet offering background information about the show and photos from the event.

Here is the track list of the video:

“Midnight Rambler”
“(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”
“I’m Free”
Eulogy
“I’m Yours & I’m Hers”
“Jumpin’ Jack Flash”
“Honky Tonk Women”
“Love in Vain”
“Sympathy for the Devil”

The Rolling Stones, ‘From The Vault: Hyde Park Live 1969’ Blu-ray Review

Immagine

Even in the world of rock gods, the show must go on at all costs. Just two days after Brian Jones died at age 27, The Rolling Stones performed for free on a makeshift stage in London’s Hyde Park on July 5, 1969. It was also the first time Mick Taylor, whose guitar would define the Stones’ most consistently brilliant period, performed live with the group. And it was also their first full performance in two years.

The concert was filmed for a TV special called The Stones In The Park, which makes up Eagle Rock’s latest From The Vault Blu-ray, Hyde Park Live 1969. While the concert was a full performance with 14 songs, the documentary only included nine songs, many of them edited to fit into a 55-minute program that also included interviews with Mick Jagger.

Seeing as this was their first full show in two years, many of the songs the Stones performed had never been done live before. They also didn’t have much time to rehearse, so the performances are ragged and unrefined. Even “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” doesn’t sound that great here. By the time the show was nearing its end, the Stones had found a groove and exploded for an 18-minute version of “Sympathy For The Devil” with African musicians on drums. Unfortunately, only 10 minutes of the song are included in the film.

The most entertaining parts of the documentary aren't the performances. It's the interviews with Jagger and members of the crowd.
There’s a particularly funny moment when a man says that the Stones will never get anything like the Beatles, who received MBEs, because they fight the system. I wonder how that man feels now that Jagger is a knight. There’s also another funny bit when Jagger tries to explain why playing concerts for money is pointless.

Unlike last month’s Marquee Club Live 1971 Blu-ray/CD set, The Stones In The Park is presented with high definition video here. However, there are no bonus tracks and no CD is included. There is a booklet with an essay, though.

While it would really have been nice to see more performances from this historic show, Stones fans will certainly get a kick out of seeing this documentary if they never have. Hyde Park Live 1969 hits stores on July 24.

Musica: esce video storico concerto Rolling Stones a Hyde Park

Immagine

(AGI) - Londra, 18 lug. 'From the Vault: Hyde Park Live in 1969' sara' distribuito in Dvd, Blu-Ray e sara' anche disponibile su Internet in formato digitale. Fra le canzoni presenti, '(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction', 'I'm Yours & I'm Hers' e 'Honky Tonk Women'. .

DVD Review: 'The Rolling Stones from the Vault: Hyde Park Live 1969'

Immagine

Rolling Stones fans going through withdrawal as the band's current Zip Code Tour of North America winds up might find some relief in their latest live archival release. "The Rolling Stones from the Vault: Hyde Park Live 1969" will hit shelves in DVD, Blu-Ray and digital formats on July 24 via Eagle Rock.

"Hyde Park Live 1969" is an intriguing documentary and piece of pop history. The film catches the legendary British rockers at a watershed moment in their career, giving a free concert on July 5, 1969 in London's historic Hyde Park in front of an estimated 400,000 fans. The future Rock and Roll Hall of Famers made their return to the stage after a two year hiatus with newly hired guitarist Mick Taylor making his live stage debut, hot on the heels of the tragic death of ex-Stones guitarist and founding member Brian Jones.

Captured near the peak of their popularity, The Rolling Stones had been long absent from touring due to drug related issues and the band is clearly nervous about gigging live, which adds an edge to their Hyde Park performance. The Stones are clearly under rehearsed (easy to tell if you compare it to their sound by the time of their legendary live album Get Yer Ya Ya’s Out!). The arrangements occasionally train wreck and many songs are drastically under metered with guitarist Keith Richards spending a good portion of the concert out of tune (no electronic guitar tuners in those days and crowd noise made it impossible to hear – you’ll see them trying to tune backstage to a harmonica just before the concert).

If you accept this a product of its time, ignore the 70's graininess of the film's look and don’t expect the camera to be constantly focused on the stage (it is an award winning “documentary” NOT “ a concert”), this 56- minute chestnut has much to offer any Rolling Stones buff, despite the aforementioned foibles. There’s a definite electricity to their performance – and a detectable raw chemistry, evidencing the witches brew that would later come to a full boil on legendary albums like Get Yer Ya Ya’s Out!, Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main St.

Their sound comes across raw, genuine, bluesy and edgey – no backing singers, horn section or frills (except for an added percussion rhythm section on “Sympathy for the Devil”). The audio has been digitally restored, remixed and remastered. Eagle Rock offers purchasers the choice of Dolby Digital Stereo, Dolby 5.1 and DTS Surround Sound.

The documentary follows the band onstage and behind the scenes, catching snippets of Mick Jagger expressing concerns about his ability to read a eulogy he’s prepared for Brian Jones, brief interviews with UK Hell’s Angels members who’ve been hired to act as bodyguards at the concert (foreshadowing the disaster at Altamont to follow), Keith Richards and Mick Taylor jamming backstage (almost worth the price of the DVD by itself) and Jagger pontificating circa 1960’s hippy speak on what a rock concert ought to be.

Occasionally, directors Jo Durden-Smith and Leslie Woodhead fade some of the Stones’ live performances in and out during scene changes which is bound infuriate some purists. Originally filmed for TV broadcast by Granada, the film also presents the songs in a completely different song order than the original concert setlist.

Unlike past "From the Vault" Stones offerings, the biggest downside to"Hyde Park Live 1969" is the lack of bonus features asides from a 16-page booklet. Audio footage for the entire concert exists, but sadly no bonus CD is offered. Also bonus features offered in previously released foreign editions, including “Mercy Mercy”in Dolby 5.1 its entirety and partial performances of “Stray Cat Blues” and “No Expectations" are also not offered here.

Eagle Rock has previously made "Hyde Park Live 1969" available as a bonus disc with The Stones' 2013 Hyde Park Live release “Sweet Summer Sun” 2-DVD + 2-CD + Blu-ray Deluxe set. So, if you already own this set, there’s no compelling reason to re-purchase the new release unless you're a completist.

"The Rolling Stones from the Vault: Hyde Park Live 1969" is available for pre-order here. See below for the entire track listing. For all the latest details on The Rolling Stones, click here.

Did you know? "Stones in Hyde Park" was winner of the Best News Documentary at the 1969 Rank News Awards.

The Rolling Stones: From the Vault – Hyde Park Live 1969 (Blu-ray Review)

Immagine

`From The Vault` is a series of live concerts from The Rolling Stones archive which are getting their first official release. `Hyde Park 1969` is the latest addition to the series. It was one of the most highly anticipated gigs of 1969 and it delivered on all the promise and then some. On July 5, 1969, the Rolling Stones hosted their iconic free concert in London`s Hyde Park. Having taken two years off from the road, the show was conceived as the beginning of the band s big return to the live stage. It was also planned as an introduction of their hot new guitar player, Mick Taylor. The former disciple of British blues legend John Mayall had been inducted into the Stones just a month prior. Over 400,000 delirious fans of all ages gathered into the park for the concert. The Stones` concert in London’s Hyde Park would pay homage to the late Brian Jones and usher in the new and extraordinary era of Mick Taylor (1969-74). Bring The Concert Experience Home With Brilliant Picture and Superior Surround Sound

The Show

This now legendary concert performance by The Rolling Stones in Hyde Park in 1969 was to be their crown achievement at that time but was sort of scaled back in the wake of their founding member Brian Jones’ death use 2-days prior. Since they already had committed to the free show they carried on. Whether they were in their right minds on not or just fighting back the grief is any one guess. They had a show to do and there was no stopping it. Fans began showing up to the event the night before and slept overnight at the park but by morning thousands had already descended onto the grass at the base of the stage.

The band conducted interviews behind the scenes and their security liaison would have a talk to the Hells Angels about securing the venue and keeping watchful eyes on the crowd and to make sure no one was accosted or got hurt. The official tally in attendance was to be 250,000 fans. Some may or may not have been in their right minds due to whatever mind-expanding drugs they were on (their dancing, if you can call it dancing gives it away).

This program was filmed for television and in doing so runs only 55 minutes, with interviews included, so it’s a shortened set, and it’s also out of order, with exception the closing song. The full set list ran 15-songs deep this Blu-ray only has 8 songs. I would say that the running time and shortened set contribute to the average rating that I’m giving it. It’s also not one of their best and polished sets. Mick Taylor was making his guitar debut and the band seemed to just go with the flow. Jagger was Jagger and Keith was Keith although very much in the background. Charlie Watts surprisingly hit those skins with utmost conviction – at one point he is smashing on them and you can see him yell out COME ON! To say that this is a raw performance would be an understatement.

I have only ever seen one other of these From the Vault shows (Hampton Coliseum – REVIEW HERE) and I preferred that one but that show is much more polished. Hyde Park is more punk-ish and garage than anything. It is worth watching at least once, though.

Set List

Midnight Rambler
(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction
I’m Free
I’m Yours & I’m Hers
Jumpin’ Jack Flash
Honky Tonk Woman
Love In Vain
Sympathy For The Devil

Encoding: AVC/MPEG-4

Resolution: 1080i

Aspect Ratio: 1.33:1

Clarity/Detail: The film looks as good as it can considering the source it was taken from. Contrast is steady and sharpness levels are on point, with only minor edge enhancement and aliasing here and there. One must consider the source on a release like this.

Depth: You will feel like you’re part of the crowd and that’s a good thing. The crowd is mellow and this transfer showcases that in almost every frame.

Black Levels: It’s a daytime concert, with only few instances of nighttime scenes, mainly the ones from the folks sleeping at the park site. Those levels were fine.

Color Reproduction:

Flesh Tones: Flesh tones were natural and wait until you see the many-sunburned folks out there. Either it’s a sun tan or a bar tan.

Noise/Artifacts: The film is 45 years old, so there are many instances of dirt, debris, hair, etc., but it is what it is.

Audio Format(s): English DTS-HD MA 5.1, LPCM Stereo 2.0

Subtitles: N/A

Extras N/A

Dynamics: It’s an open toss up between a full surround sound option and a stereo option – both in 24-bit audio but I’ll say that the stereo track offers the better option. The instruments are nicely balanced and so are the vocals, even more so when the thrashing begins.

Low Frequency Extension: The LFE reacts nicely during scenes of low-end bass on the 5.1 option.

Surround Sound Presentation: The crowd sounds great and there is only an instance or two of feedback and echoing that swirl the soundscape. It’s nothing major.

Dialogue Reproduction: Dialogue is fine during the interview segments and you can understand most of the slurring unless Jagger moves the microphone away.

Summary

Make no mistake, The Rolling Stones are a great band, but I’m thinking that due to the loss of Brian Jones two days earlier, they were just not their organized selves. Some will say that they were never organized but you can tell that this performance wasn’t their tightest. It was a bit sloppy but the 250,000+ in attendance didn’t care and neither did I. The Blu-ray has adequate technical specifications but zero special features, which will bring the rating down a notch. If you’re a fan of the band than this Blu-ray release is a no-brainer but they have released better Blu-ray material before.

Altre Due Uscite Fondamentalmente Inutili. Rolling Stones – From The Vault: Hyde Park ’69 E Simon And Garfunkel – The Concert In Central Park

Come diceva qualcuno un tempo, la domanda sorge spontanea, perché, why? E soprattutto perché proprio ora e in queste modalità.

Ciao Luka, Hyde Park è disponibile solo in dvd e Blu-ray.
